U of A excellence in training continues to expand inZhejiang, China
New agreements and opportunities for medical students,residents and faculty.

Members of theUniversity of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) traveled toChina late November, 2018, with positive outcomes of strengthened agreementsand new avenues for professional and academic partnerships in medical training.Chairs and professors from the departments of Surgery, Family Medicine and Obstetrics& Gynecology spent several days at the The Fourth Affiliated Hospital ofZhejiang University, located in the city of Yiwu, presenting at workshops andattending tours and meetings in the hospital.
The encounter led toa new agreement between the surgery departments of both universities tosolidify the partnership through the organization of a biennial internationalconference. The teams also discussed the expansion of exchange tripopportunities for FoMD surgery residents and medical students who wish toincorporate visits to Zhejiang medical school and the Fourth AffiliatedHospital as part of their programs.
This was the firstvisit from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN) to Zhejiang,led by department chair Radha Chari. Both universities will be working onidentifying key research areas in OB/GYN to develop collaborations, and haveplanned new meetings and visits in the near future to better get to know eachother’s programs and institutions for maternal and children’s health.
“The FourthAffiliated hospital of Zhejiang University has become one of our majorhealth-care and training partners in China in the last six or seven years,”said Renny Khan, Director of International Programs in the FoMD. “We now havemore departments than ever involved in this collaboration and we haveopportunities that we didn't foresee a year or even two years ago. It's growingreally fast.”
During this time,Zhejiang University celebrated the official launch of the Yiwu GeneralPractitioner's Ability Enhancement Training Project, with a first cohort of 17trainees. The Yiwu General Practitioner Training Center was unveiled at theFourth Affiliated Hospital in April 2018 along with the announcement of thegeneral practitioner training program, designed in collaboration with theFoMD’s Department of Family Medicine.
Over the past twoyears, Zhejiang University has developed stronger bonds with the U of A andconferred the title of honorary professor to FoMD’s Lee Green (familymedicine), Ray Rajotte (surgery), Gina Rayat (surgery) and Jonathan Choy(cardiology). Future plans for this partnership include potential internationalfaculty development initiatives for both universities.
According to Khan,the expansion of this collaboration to different medical areas is paving theway for more training opportunities for Canadian students and faculty, andfacilitating exposure to different health systems.
“These are excitingprojects that help highlight the University of Alberta’s reputation among topmedical schools and funding agencies, in Canada and internationally,” saidKhan. “Zhejiang University and the Fourth Hospital in Yiwu in particular havebeen outstanding partners, they have provided generous support to cement thisrelationship and take it to the next level.”
加拿大阿尔伯塔大学卓越的培训继续在中国浙江扩张，新签订协议为医学生、住院医生和教师提供机会
浙江大学医学院附属第四医院院长徐健与外科主任David Williams签署协议，扩大两校团队的合作。
阿尔伯塔大学医学与牙科学院(FoMD)成员于2018年11月下旬访华，双方就加强医学培训专业和学术合作达成了积极成果。浙江大学医学院第四附属医院位于义乌市，来自外科、家庭医学和妇产科的教授们在医院进行了为期几天的讲座、参观和学术会议。
这次会面使两所大学的外科学系达成了一项新的协议，通过组织两年一次的国际会议来巩固合作关系。双方还讨论了扩大住院医师和医学生交流的机会，希望将浙江大学医学院和浙大四院作为他们项目的一部分。
这是妇产科主任Radha Chari第一次来到浙江。双方将在妇产科的关键研究领域开展合作，并计划在不久的将来举行新的会议和访问，以增进双方在妇女儿童领域的了解。
“在过去的六七年里，浙大四院已经成为我们在中国的主要医疗和培训合作伙伴之一，”阿尔伯塔大学医学院国合办主任Renny Khan说。“我们现在有比以往任何时候都多的部门参与到这次合作中来，我们有一年甚至两年前都没有预见到的机会，它增长得非常快。”
期间，浙大四院举行了义乌全科医生能力提升培训项目正式启动，首批培训学员17人。义乌全科医生培训中心于2018年4月在第四附属医院揭牌，同时发布了与阿尔伯塔大学家庭医学部合作设计的全科医生培训项目。
在过去的两年中，浙江大学与阿尔伯塔大学建立了更紧密的联系，并授予了名誉教授的称号，包括Lee Green(家庭医学)，Ray Rajotte(外科)，GinaRayat (外科)和Jonathan Choy(心脏病
学)。这一伙伴关系的未来计划包括两所大学潜在的国际师资发展计划。
Khan说，这种合作扩展到不同的医疗领域，为加拿大的学生和教师提供更多的培训机会铺平了道路，并促进了接触不同的卫生系统。
